Latest update April 2012

Post by mark chapman » Sun Apr 29, 2012 2:14 pm

Here are the latest photo's just to show where I am up to.
I have Just about finished the Hull sides . I could have done some work on the saddle tank sides but I have decided that after painting /shading/ weathering and the covering with water the need to get a oil can effect on those as well would be wasted so I have only concentrated on the rest of ther hulls oil can effect.
Once the internals have been painted I will add more styrene to replicate the inner pressure hull. I will use plans to work out which holes are obstructed by the inner hull and those that are not and allow the hull to be be seen through.
I have also completed a open torpedo tube as I want the sub to be represented as just having fired a torpedo and have a torpedo just ahead of the sub partly submerged.

Cracking work Mark!
Could you please explain your methods to achieve the marvelous "oil canning" effect shown in the pictures?
Cheers,
Pete.
Best regards, Pete. (A.O.T.F.) :character-spongebobdance:

Hi Pete,
Oil canning was acheived by shaping my own scrapper out of a small scalpel blade .It took a few attemts but I eventually got a blade shape with just the right curve and more inportantly the right width that allowed me to scrape away enough plastic to keep it smooth with no sharp troughs in the transision but not to wide that it would be in danger of removing rivits.
I scraped all one side of the rivets then turned the sub up the other way and worked on the other side of the rivits and finally and very gently the top and bottom of the panels.
When the blade felt like it was getting a dull edge I just lightly went over fine wet and dry each time.
